Here's basically how it works. The Sonicview 8000HD PVR is a fully functional FTA (Free to Air Receiver) that is pre-downloaded with all of the FTA channels outside of the U.S. (that's anywhere from 1000-3000 channels at any give time alone!). Free-to-Air (FTA) is exactly what the name implies. Free-to-Air systems do not require package programming; the channels are free to view and there are no monthly programming charges. Free-to-air channels can be broadcast in either analog or digital signals. Currently there are hundreds of freely available channels many of which are international language channels; many others are special interests channels broadcast in English. Although not the intended use of FTA, upgrading to get premium domestic channels is possible. All software and firmware for this purpose is available for download by 3rd party websites. You can find out more on this topic by visiting the free FTA Forum site www.ftalife.com and clicking on the Sonicview section. FTA setup information is there as well. the 8PSK module. That is why we sell the two together in a combo version.

In order to start viewing satellite TV, you will need a the aforementioned
unit, a satellite dish, a null modem cable (included with purchase), and
a diseqc switch (included with purchase). For those of you interested
in viewing FTA channels, a 30" dish equipped with a singular linear LNB
is required. For those of you interested in viewing premium channels,
a 22" dish equipped with dual circular LNB's is required. We sell both
dishes. Click here to view the product
page. You will also need to point your dish towards the desired satellites
that you wish to pick up. You can find a location of all of the satellites
in the atomosphere along with their respective longitudes and lattitudes
at www.lyngsat.com. Or you can purchase a Satellite Finder. This makes
finding a satellite a piece of cake. It works by pointing the dish away
from the satellites and turning the adjuster until the clear LED glows
red and a noise is emitted (Starting point). When the dish nears the satellite
position the LED will turn green and emit a higher pitched sound. The
adjuster can then be turned for fine alignment to the dish. You
can purchase one of those here.
In regards to getting your satellite dish installed in your home, we suggest
you contact a local satellite dish installer in your area. You can easily
find one in by thumbing through your local Yellow Pages.
